Modeline problem with Radeon KMS

Is it just 2048x1536 that's causing problems?  Do any other modes
work?  1600x1200 for example?

I notice you have a monitor section defined in your xorg.conf.  Does
that monitor section perhaps have any old modelines from an old
monitor that may be causing problems?
