I used your method, but it worked 2 out of my 5 attempts. To be precise, I
booted on text mode, set the values as you wrote and then startx. On successful
starts, the environment was still slow, despite the Xorg.log stating that
acceleration was on. The successful starts did not last very long however, as
they crashed after 1-2 minutes.

I attached my GPU Vbios.
