Oh, and I almost forgot: if you attach GDB, hit the assert, and leave that bash
script running, it will assume the test is hung after a couple minutes and kill
it.

To prevent this, you'll have to suspend the bash process, and let GDB react to
the signal its child got, and then you can debug in peace.
