To be clear - rc8 (without any other patches) resolves my black screen at boot
time issue.

I did have a black screen when coming out of suspend issue, which is now
resolved, but I didn't think this was driver related as it also happened in
Windows on the same machine. There has been a AMD Windows driver update
recently too, so maybe the issue was resolved on both?
