be able to find a guide by googling "building a custom kernel <distroname>".
In general you might want to
* mkdir mybuilddir
* git clone git://people.freedesktop.org/~agd5f/linux
* cd linux
* cp /boot/config-<your-current-config> .config
* if you're on ubuntu/debian:
* make deb-pkg
* sudo dpkg -i <path to custom kernel .deb from your install></pre>
