Do you need X11 or not?

Luis explained in another message how to install Russell's X11 driver
for etnaviv.

I have been using Buildroot to generate an image with Etnaviv for a
non-X11 environment:
https://git.buildroot.net/buildroot/tree/configs/imx6q-sabresd_qt5_defconfig

It runs Qt5, kmscube and glmark2.
