IMO the only benefit of having the new commit id for updates (and to get
its size) is to prevent telling the user the update is XYZ MB and by the
time the user chooses to update, there are new commits that double the size
the user expected.
I don't think it's a critical feature but it'd be nice to have that,
especially for users that have a limited connection.
