Space Requirements (Dependencies)

On another board, a question was posted about the space requirements of
the GIMP package. On a new system, the Software Manager was estimating
well over 1 GB - GIMP and Gnome Platform, most for the Gnome stuff.
What I was wondering is why Flatpaks require the entire platforms (I've
seen this with Okular needing the KDE platform) instead of just the
libraries it really needs?

As much as I like the Flatpak system, I was sympathetic to the user
balking at installing something with such a huge space requirement when
the normal (albeit older) package was significantly less intrusive. I
personally don't care - space and download speed are not a problem for
me, and I understand that these platforms will not need to be reloaded
on every new install.
