Hi all,
Flatpak is now on the Open Collective platform, so we can now receive donations from individuals or organizations and build an independent funding source. Just in the twelve days since the announcement, 33 people have contributed financially, many of them recurring monthly donations! And since we are hosted by the Open Collective Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, donations are tax deductible and potentially eligible for employer donation matching programs.
My hope is that this funding can be used to pay for development of Flatpak's core technologies such as portals. The OBS project seems to be a successful model for funding development on OpenCollective; they also pay for other expenses such as developer hardware. I have been researching how such projects decide the amount to pay for engineering work but haven't found a definitive answer yet.
Happy to hear any feedback on this endeavor! Everything is transparent at https://opencollective.com/flatpak
