To be fair, font scanning should just be fast. Even if the wait time is only
seconds on the very first scan, the initial impression of your software might
be ruined, and the user will look for something else. Taking dozens of minutes
is a damn joke.

Fontconfig is really a serious liability. In libass, we've been trying to get
rid of it on win32 and osx for a while now.
