I understand that, but it creates big problems for portable software.

In fact, it seems serious portable software should invent its own font
abstraction layer, instead of using fontconfig&freetype. It would be nice if
that were not the case.

Also, the fontconfig slowness actually does cause problems on Linux too. libass
is slow at using external fonts embedded in subs (which happen frequently with
the kind of files libass is meant to work with), and I bet there are other
use-cases where this can become a problem, such as webfonts.
