Since bindings are not public API right now, we might as well add a new value,
so we'd have:

  binding=strong -> match
  binding=weak   -> approximate
  binding=??     -> fallback

or maybe use weak for fallback and add a semi-strong for approximates.  That
might reduce the number of configurations we would need to adjust.
