Both Xft1 and Xft compile against Freetype2.  Make sure you configure 
things appropriately.

$ sh ./configure
$ make

should work, if it doesn't, please file a bug in the fontconfig bugzilla 
page with as much information as you can muster, especially including the 
CPU and OS involved.
