I've also uploaded

http://plam.csail.mit.edu/~plam/tmp/fontconfig-mmap-050609-efficient.diff

which is much more efficient at saving the mmap file to disk, in that
fc-mmap takes much less peak memory now.  I believe that it consumes the
same order of magnitude of memory as fontconfig does in normal operation.
