It looks like it works ok if you have previously done a build in srcdir, but
if srcdir is clean, it fails for me.

This seems to be because the func.refs target in doc/Makefile.am makes
symlinks to the .sgml files in the srcdir, which happens after the .sgml files
have been generated in the builddir.  But I can't quite grasp the logic what
doc/Makefile.am is trying to do, so I'm not sure what's wrong.
