The *Wavelet Scalar Quantization* algorithm (*WSQ*) is a compression 
algorithm used for gray-scale fingerprint

wavelet <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wavelet> theory and has become a 
standard for the exchange and storage of fingerprint images.
