You sound like a clueful user so I would advise to recompile ld with
debugging symbols, extract the exact command that makes ld crash and
execute that in gdb. And after that I would open a bug against ld.
I really don't know what we could have done wrong. We probably hit
some obscure cornercase nobody ever thought about.

+You might also want to add '-v' to CFLAGS, so that gcc will print out
+the exact command line used to call ld. That may yield clues as to
