Looks like the problem is in the GStreamer plugin.  But could you try something
closer to the pipeline that Rhythmbox uses:

gst-launch-0.8 gnomevfssrc location=stereophonics2004-02-04t02.shn  ! typefind !
spider ! volume ! audioconvert ! audioscale ! osssink
