I installed gstreamer-0.7.3 and gst-plugins-0.7.3 from source on my Slackware
Linux 9 system (which already has gstreamer-0.6.0 and its prerequisites) - ask
for the full details if you wish to follow this up - and finally ran
gst-register. I saw:

>added plugin avi with 2 feature(s)

(path_spill != NULL)
>aborting...
>Aborted

The registry seems nevertheless to have been created ok. At least:

$ gst-inspect alsasink

and:

$ gst-launch sinesrc ! alsasink

from the new installation work fine.
