I was able to get this working by using:
gst-launch-0.8 filesrc location=/home/defaultuser/boulevard.mp3 ! spider !
volume ! audioscale ! audioconvert ! alsasink device=hw:0

And that worked. How do I apply this setting to gstreamer-properties?
