I got this error message while trying to open a quicktime video in Pitivi.

GStreamer encountered a general stream error.
qtdemux.c(1404): gst_qtdemux_loop ():

streaming stopped, reason not-negotiated

The Quicktime movie was on my NTFS Windows XP partition.
