This is a FC4 issue. Mplayer isn't related AT all to gstreamer.

On a side issue, the fact of not being able to play fullscreen means mplayer is
using the X11 video output and not the XV video output.

Are you sure you didn't have any other program (using the XV output) running
when you tried that ?
