Starting from https://answers.launchpad.net/jokosher/+ticket/3205 I was able to
reduce my problem down to

GST_DEBUG_NO_COLOR=true GST_DEBUG=5 gst-launch-0.10 alsasrc ! audioconvert !
vorbisenc ! oggmux ! filesink location=myfile.ogg 2 &> log

failing. The resulting log file and sound file can be found over here:
