I am not quite sure but I have Fluendo's windows media plugin for gstreamer
installed. So the error you pointed out may be due to lack of a plugin for
windows media. 
However, if I've got your point right and there is no play list, then there is
no reason why totem stops on the advertisement and fails to play the main
stream.
