I'm now running gnome 2.22 with kernel version 2.6.25
 and it still has the same problem


As mentioned before, I've tested it with USB speakers and with and an internal
sound card and the problem is only with USB speakers. So it would seem that the
api to change the alsa volumes is faulty when communicating to a USB device.
