One additional comment...  I play a game called FreeCol on the same machine
that I reported in the original bug report.  While playing that game for the
past two hours, I had game sounds.  I do not know why I can hear sound while
playing the game, but not at other times.  There may be a clue in this
information, I do not know, but I hope it helps.
