I have been searching for so long for a way to install just the right codec for
the right file you're trying to play, but haven't found one yet.

Why not create gstreamer0.10-wmv for wmv-files?

Of course it's restricted in Non-Free repo, but still it should be called
gstreamer0.10-wmv or just gstreamer-wmv.
