Why an upstream event rather than, say, a downstream query? Is this something
dynamic that may change while the pipeline is playing?

As for the adapter-bypass-code in comment #2: isn't the main goal to avoid
malloc()s+memcpy()s of the data when merging two GstBuffers in GstAdapter? If
the buffers pushed into the adapter are all of the wanted size, the overhead of
the adapter functions is surely negligible, no?
