So it works with luvcview, but not GStreamer. 
"system error: Protocolfout", I wonder what that means.

Have you tried setting the video input plugin to "v4lsrc" also?

it would be good if you could tell which version of gstreamer and v4l2src you
have (gst-inspect v4l2src | grep Version).
