I'm using Xubuntu 9.04 on an old iMac G3 with the 2.6.28-6-powerpc kernel. I've
tried MP3, FLAC and WAV playback with the GStreamer package installed (in
various configurations), but most recently I have added the GStreamer packages
through the "ubuntu-restricted-extras" package. I have been able to play those
very same files on Windows machines and the MP3's have even worked fine with
the "mpg123" command-line player on this iMac. The only other formats I have
tried are WMA's, which I assume do not have valid codecs in the packages I
installed. The actual error message pops up as follows every time I play these
files in Totem:

Internal GStreamer error: pad problem. Please file a bug at
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=GStreamer.

I receive this error from with in Totem Movie Player 2.26.1, but I have tried
these same files in VLC, where VLC will simply close out without any warning
(probably due to the same error?)

I can try to provide more information if necessary for proper diagnosis of this
problem.
