This is a problem with the configured sound output. go to System => Preferences
=> Sound and try other outputs for Music/Movie playback.

(The bug here is that GStreamer did not post a decent error message and you get
the generic one instead. This has been fixed ages ago though, you might want to
upgrade ubuntu to a newer version to get this fixed).
