Most likely this is one of these two things:

 a) you don't have the right kernel modules / sound
    drivers (alsa) loaded for your sound card, or
    there's a problem with the sound drivers
    (your distro should be able to help you with this)

 b) you're missing some essential GStreamer packages
    that should have been installed automatically
    (gst-plugins-base, gst-plugins-good). This is quite
    unlikely, but would also be a problem with your
    distro, and your distro's support forums should
    be able to help you with that.
