Provide a plug-in that allows one to draw arbitrary things as an overlay using
Cairo.

A proposed way of doing this is to pull out everything text render specific in
the existing cairotextoverlay plugin, and instead provide a callback that gets
called every time the plug-in wants you to draw a frame.
