When running gstreamer 0.10.26 or newer, everything installs and runs normally
except gst-plugins-scanner.  When gst-plugins-scaner is invoked either manually
from a terminal emulator or externally (e.g. via Firefox), the process demands
100% of available CPU cycles and doesn't stop until it is killed.  This
behavior has been confirmed on Mac OS 10.6 but may occur on previous versions
