This bug hasn't seen any activity in 20 months. I suggest we close it as
OBSOLETE. There are too many  old comments, and it's hard to make sense of
what's relevant and what's not.

I suggest new bugs be opened for specific well-defined enhancement requests.
This is more likely to yield results IMHO.

There's also bug #554168 which I'm guessing refers to the issue mentioned in
the last few comments (it's not really entirely clear, since it doesn't provide
a great deal of context / information).
