Dang - my problem disappeared. After trying a build with --prefix=/usr it went
away, and it's still gone after switching back to the prefix I normally use.

Before all of that, I had tried a build with 'git clean -f -d -x'... which
should have completely scrubbed the tree, so I have no idea what's going on.

Either way, I can't reproduce it now :-/
