What we are currently doing in GES to handle gaps in a timeline is to add a
"background" which is a GESTimelineTest with a G_MAXUINT priority and
expandable.

I am wondering if that couldn't cause this kind of misbehaviour?

What should be done is properly detect gaps in each GESTrack and add a
GESTrackXxxTest source in each gap, that resizes/is removed whenever it is
needed.
