I don't like it how the layout is now determined by the width of the video.
this breaks cropping or simple adjustments to the width to implement padding.

What I think would be better is if you code the extra parameters to determine
the layout of the planes inside a free plane of data. This would also make it
possible to reuse the existing functions and existing things will just keep on
working.
