You could replace CC/LD/etc with "libtool --mode=link gcc" too to fix this btw

I'm not sure why we need the .la files at all here, I currently can't think of
a reason. And would like to change it like you mentioned.

Tim, do you remember anything? The only thing .la provides on top of what we
have is the dependency_libs, but those should always be explicitly linked in
anyway.
