That actually depends on the video sink. Which one is used here and is the
video sink adding the black borders? cluttersink and xvimagesink will do that,
and then GStreamer has no way to draw over the black borders.

For sinks that don't do that (ximagesink for example), this could be fixed by
putting the subtitle overlaying after the videoscale in playsink. Just that
this seems not very useful these days as all useful sinks do the black borders
and scaling themselves.


For cluttersink, totem could implement its own text-sink and overlay the text
itself via clutter API.
