Aha, as I suspected on IRC then :)

Patch looks generally fine, but I think we should trim off terminating zeroes
elsewhere and in general, so maybe early in convert_encoding() or before
calling convert_encoding()?

It's called a NUL in this case btw, NULL is for pointers.
