Does it work with latest master? It seems to do for me.

However I'm still puzzled because when investigated it seemed like it shouldn't
work.

For example:

gst-launch-1.0 playbin
uri=https://cdn.phoenix.intergi.com/19850/videos/4357110/video-sd.mp4
video-sink="( capsfilter caps=video/x-h264 ! fakesink async=true sync=true )"
audio-sink="( capsfilter caps=audio/mpeg ! fakesink async=true sync=true )"

still gets stuck for me
