My idea would be to just add a device-uid property additionally (that is of
type string). And whenever that is set to non-NULL it would be used instead of
the (integer typed!) device property.

We can't really change the type of the existing property at this point, but we
could deprecate the old property to make people aware of it being a bit
suboptimal.
