I'm leaning towards ignoring it for 1.6 now, seeing that 1) it's "quite late"
in the 1.6 cycle, and 2) this is clearly non-trivial with risks of new/other
breakages being introduced as a result of the fixes, and 3) we don't even know
what set of patches we need at this point.

A unit test would be helpful to make sure it's not broken again in future.
