I have also noticed that just before stopping the audio becomes distorted for a
few seconds, and then it disappears but regular glitches (such as chk chk chk
for a few seconds) are heard, and then silence.

I will try to record this.

More info about test case:

I am using Opus for transmitting audio with PLC and FEC. On Android I use
GStreamer 1.8.0 built via cerber, except bumping Opus to the most recent
version. On Mac OS X I use plain GStreamer 1.8.0 from official builds so Opus
is slightly older and the same happens.

On the server side I use GStreamer 1.8.0 (built manually) but underlying
libraries come from plain Ubuntu 14.04 so they may be slightly outdated.
