Ok I made some progress.

I managed to setup an OS X test environment, fought past the currently buggy
networking, and tested freedesktop master, my fix-memory patch, and ilovezfs's
qtgstreamer-memory patch and verified that only ilovezfs's fixes it.

I do need to try building on linux with ilovezfs's fix to make sure that works.
