I have to check some details with the windows APIs and run through all the
scenarios, but other than working for this here it might also solve the buffer
pool directly with some extra care in the implementation. But it slightly seems
to change behaviour in some IMHO unsupported corner cases, replacing undefined
behaviour that might work with a deadlock.
