FWIW, PANGOCAIRO_BACKEND=fontconfig will break gtk+3 apps in terrible ways. So
don't set that by default or else you will get weird behavior and lots of
these:
Gtk-WARNING **: drawing failure for widget 'GtkBox': out of memory
