Fix BACKLOG delayed TIMEOUT trigger

Please include the whole explanation what this fixes and how in the commit
message.


But basically the only thing this does is to default to ERROR (so nothing
happens => ERROR), not override it with OK and propagate upwards whatever
writing data has returned. That seems reasonable but I'm not sure why that
fixes this specific problem.
