the current behaviour (that I want) is to flip in sync with when the rotating
ball does a cycle. 

the position of the ball gives you an idea of the possession of the cycle so
you see as it approaches the top of the cycle.  the flip makes it easy to see
when it hit that point.

This is all for watching two displays that should be in sync and deciding how
close they are.
